The "Fair" Mentality - Why it won't work

You no doubt would have noticed a lot of talk these days about fairness, equality and what is fair and what is not.
The new Labour leader and her comrades seem to have a lot to say about this and generally believe that everyone should have a fair shake of life. Sounds good but is it realistic and does it represent what really happens in the real world?

Fair is a state of mind in my opinion, and most often, a very unhealthy state of mind.

                      Here is why:

In every aspect of life including business, employment, politics, most of us are beneficiaries of the outcomes we have contributed to. In other words we cannot, should not, blame society, family, parents, employers for our station in life.

Where we are in life is largely because of the choices we make and the attitudes we adopt along the way. I can think of countless people who have overcome all odds in life and made the world a better place because they chose to not give in, or, blame others for the situations they found themselves in. Strength of character and a willingness/determination to overcome helped them succeed in life.

There is no doubt that challenges exist and in a growing number of cases here in NZ those challenges are very real and becoming an ever increasing burden.
However, attempting to regulate and legislate fairness will simply not solve our problems, end of story. If anything it will only add to our burgeoning welfare state and ensure the ongoing dependency of many on the government - which is a very dangerous thing.

You probably were not born with a silver spoon, in fact, you actually didn't have a spoon at all, however, remember it is not your circumstances that matter but rather what you do with them and turn them into that counts. Taking responsibility is key, something our Labour politicians have no idea about.
They want to make you dependent and create fairness for all. Let's blame society, let's blame poverty, let's blame business, let's blame our farmers (very topical), let's blame everything else other than ourselves and make life fair. After all, it is just not fair that "you are doing well" and we are not, which tends to be their mentality.

Churchill stated the following: "Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy. It's inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."

Labour particularly, but also all other parties in government to a large extent want you to be miserable just like everyone else, then, we will apparently have utopia and life will be fair.
Question is however, is that really what we want?

A good leader knows they have an obligation to do the right thing regardless of whether it is fair or not. When our leaders attempt to navigate the very slippery slope of fairness, they find themselves the referee of public opinion and slave to the politically correct. Having a "Fair" mentality will only impose mediocrity on society and limit and restrict every aspect of your lives.

In the real world, life is not fair, get used to it, take responsibility and become determined to overcome life's challenges.
